| Customer Reviews: Great jack hammer July 20, 2010 Gotta Run (Half Moon Bay, CA, USA) Have used on 5 different projects. Observations:
Packing: Arrived undamaged, also thin steel case was dented in places - won't be using it for storage anyway. Oil bottle leaked a bit, again not a problem. Even comes with safety glasses and leather gloves!
Accessories: comes with two very substantial tools for concrete, etc. Bought optional spade attachment, which was expensive (about $50), but it allows you to simply melt through the hardest dirt. Really saves the pick and shovel work. Remember to dig straight down, then slant the angle of drilling as you finish each stroke in order to bring up the chunk of dirt for easy removal.
Tool quality: seems to be very heavy duty in construction. Easy to see sight glass to check the oil level periodically. Heavy (about 25 lbs.) to allow the weight of the tool dig, rather than using your back and muscles. Had to get use to letting the tool work instead of efforting it, which I was not used to. Once I relaxed, the tool was perfect for digging holes, removing hard packed dirt, and concrete.
Remember to use ear plugs. Would I buy again - definitely.
Great little hammer! July 9, 2010 Michael Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1NHOL6BRAN1P5
Great little hammer! Fairly light in weight but still delivers a powerful punch.
Best Choice Products, went the extra mile to make sure that I was satisfied with my tool. Thank you.
See video for demonstration of removal of flagstone. I did a whole room with this little hammer.
Alternative to the Sledge Hammer Method June 13, 2010 Scott J. Saiki (Dousman, Wisconsin) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
After trying to break up a heaved 4 inch thick concrete walkway set in wet soil using a sledge hammer, I concluded that working on the rock pile was a good punishment for misbehaving convicts - I also concluded that I deserved better. Purchasing this tool was a better solution.
I read all of the reviews of this, and similar demo hammers. Some of the feedback was obviously taken seriously, and a packaging engineer hired to ensure survival of the tool during shipping - mine arrived in excellent shape. That being said, the plastic bottle of gear oil leaked, and converted the lube into a messy corrosion protectant...a trip to the hardware store to purchase some gear oil and the oil reservoir was filled, and the tool was ready for work.
This isn't the all powerful, 150 lb pneumatic jack hammer that you see being used by construction workers, but it is very effective if used with some knowledge. The most useful bit of the two included, the pyramid bit, is essentially a 35# wedge, and is effective if used as follows: 1) Make sure the edge or corner that you are working has a "free" surface - when the wedge plunges into the concrete, the chunk you're breaking away will need somewhere to go - it won't easily push adjacent concrete, soil, etc. 2) Start on a corner if possible, and use the point to make some small, 1-inch deep impact holes (these are stress risers - they don't need to go completely through the slab) spaced 3-4 inches apart, making a semi-circle 8-12 inches from the corner. 3) For the final impact hole, angle the point slightly toward the edge of the slab, and keep going until the corner piece cracks off. 4) Repeat as necessary to break up the slab. 5) Do not use the tool for a pry bar to move or break chunks away - I haven't tried it, but it seems like a good way to break the cast aluminum housing - use a steel crow/wrecking bar instead.
If the slab is embedded in wet clay/soil, much of the energy being input into the slab will be absorbed the clay/soil. In this case, get a 5 foot pry bar (Home Depot, about $30-40), pry up the slab, and carefully slip a brick or piece of broken concrete under the slab so it is kept out of contact from the soil - it should break up more easily. Also make sure you're putting your weight into the tool so that the mass of the motor housing is increased and the bit is accelerated to a higher impact velocity. HAVE FUN !!!
Great electric jack hammer for the money March 24, 2010 Benjamin S. Chin (ca) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I had earlier saw-cut my 4" thick concrete driveway and needed a jack hammer to reduce the size of the slab for ease of loading and transport. Within about three days after I purchased this jack hammer tool from Sky via Amazon, I received the tool as described. The tool was delivered in a package using double card board boxes. Perhaps responding to other Amazon comments regarding dented tool box, Sky's packaging came with plastic air bubble as cushions between the paper boxes as well as styrofoam inside the metal box holding the heavy jack hammer. The tool came with two chisels, a pointed and a flat, two hex allen-wrenches, a plastic bottle containing about 10cc of oil, a plastic eye protection goggle, a pair of glove, and an instruction book.
Attaching the chisel to the hammer is a breeze, involves turning a lever to open, sliding the chisel in and turning the lever to lock. Prior to using the jack hammer, I had to fill the oil reservoir according to instruction. As the 10cc of oil included with the purchase appears to be bare minimum, I supplemented until the entire reservoir was filled. The jack hammer works as described and more. Labelled as made in China, this jack hammer appears to be heavy duty. I would not be surprise if a jack hammer contractor employs this tool in his daily work. Compared to the nearly $900 dollar jack hammer from Bosch, Milwaukee or others, this jack hammer is a bargain. For a homeowner such as myself, who occasionally needs a jack hammer, purchasing this hammer more than fits the bill as I was able to demolish all my concrete slab within two to three hours. I awarded 5 stars rating because I couldn't really fault this jack hammer at this price.
