Good Jobsite radio, not great..just good. August 6, 2010 Alberto Junco (Los Angeles, CA, USA) Pros: Great sound, loud, great tuner, strong, durable, has 12V power out let.
Cons: No Ipod functionality, display is dim in sunlight (might just be mine), battery power does not last long, seems to drain the battery when not in use.
Have had this for a while now, and still like it. It sounds great, and is very sturdy, has a 12V power outlet for charging phones, or other small devices. The problems I am having is the display is dim (could just be mine), there is no way to control the Ipod from the radio display or keypad. The Ipod sits in a sturdy, foam padded, dust proof compartment, but you have to open the compartment to access the Ipod every time you want to change the song (so you better love the songs you have on the Ipod). This is a big drawback. They should have simply add a skip feature to the control panel of the radio. The other thing I noticed was if you leave the battery plugged into the radio (even if you have the radio off) it will drain the battery. This is provably due to the fact that the other functions of the radio (clock, memory) are draining the battery, but it should last longer than a day, I think. Oh, and I have yet to use the race scanner feature. If they also included a charging circuit for the battery that would make the radio way more useful. If it charged the battery while it was plugged in then used the battery when unplugged what a great idea that would have been.
All in all it is a good radio, and I would recommend as a radio, but not an Ipod friendly device.
Ridgid R8408 jobsite radio May 19, 2010 Gary (paradise, CA USA) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
On the good side, it has a compartment to plug your I pod into and keeps it sealed against dust and dirt, and also charges it at the same time. There's also a 12v accessory outlet which could be handy for powering other accessories.
On the bad side, it's way too heavy to be carrying around, making it a chore just to get it from your vehicle to the job site, which also makes the race scanner useless, I can't imagine carrying this to a race track. The carrying handle feels like grabbing a piece of 3/4 inch conduit, and the power cord wraps around top of handle making it difficult to grab the handle. It uses batteries from your cordless Ridgid tools but it DOESN'T CHARGE THEM when plugged in to power, so you still need a charger.
Bottom line, I was very dissappointed with it, I think they missed the mark big time, so I sent it back and bought a Dewalt, it's not exactly right but much closer, and it charges the battery.
Better than the alternatives April 12, 2010 Nate S. (Wyoming) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a decent radio. I've been using cheap-o wal-mart radios on the jobsite for years and finally had enough of the poor reception, sound distortion, and tuning drift. I have personal experiance with the Dewalt and Makita radios and find that for the money this radio is better. I know this is almost $40 more than the Makita (and I have Makita Li-ion) but the Makita simply isn't loud enough. The Dewalt is ok (the older model that dosen't charge batteries is better) but the MP3 player station on the Rigid seals the deal.
Just to be clear, I have no interest in running the radio off of batteries or using it to charge batteries. I just want a radio that can handle things being dropped on it, isn't too affected by dust, dosen't drift, can pick up the XM transmitter from my truck, and sounds good. This does all that.
Rugged and Great Sounding April 8, 2010 M. Klaisner (Boston, MA) After researching several "rugged" stereos, I am glad I chose the Ridgid. It's not the loudest, but the quality of the sound is great and is perfect for using around the house, the yard and can hold up to the daily bumps and knocks. The iPod hook up is great to have and charges the iPod while it's docked. Overall, I think it's great, but the one feature I wish it had would be Bluetooth to stream music from my iPhone, but aside from that, it's a great stereo.
Quality radio March 19, 2010 Rock Star (Bonita Springs, FL) As far as jobsite radios go, this one is tops. It's sturdy and durable, and can play your IPod. Like most Ridgid products, this is great quality and does all that is advertised.
